Indiana Theft Penalties Reduced
The penalties for Theft have changed under Indiana’s new criminal code, with the Indiana legislature having actually reduced the penalties for Theft.
Before July 1st, Theft was considered a Class D felony, enhanced to a Class C felony if the fair market value of the stolen property was $100,000.00 or more.
As of July 1st, 2014 however, Theft less than $750.00 will be a Class A misdemeanor. The offense becomes a Level 6 felony if the value is from $750.00 to $49,999.00 or if the property stolen is a firearm. The offense becomes a Level 5 felony if the value is $50,000.00 or more.
